Google Tag Assistant Shows Multiple Google Tags: What Does It Mean?

Seeing multiple Google tags is not automatically an error. A store may legitimately use GA4, Google Ads conversions and other Google products. The concern is whether multiple implementations are sending the same business event more than once.

Identify each destination

Document the tag IDs and which systems own them:

  • Google & YouTube app
  • GTM
  • Shopify custom pixel
  • theme code
  • third-party tracking app

Pay special attention to Purchase

Page-view duplication is messy. Purchase duplication directly affects ROAS, bidding and conversion count.

Check whether:

  • GA4 Purchase is imported into Google Ads
  • a native Google Ads Purchase action also fires
  • both are set to Primary
  • transaction IDs are present

Do not remove tags based only on quantity

A second Google tag may be intentionally configured for a different Ads account. Verify business ownership and campaign dependencies before deleting anything.

Aim for one clear event map

For every purchase destination, know exactly which integration sends it and why.
